i can't remember getting here

So, January has dragged to an end. I was looking through some photos on my laptop and I realised that I never posted some photos from my holiday in Portugal back in October. 

I have stuck to most of my resolutions for 2015 and it's been a good year so far. My only regret is that I have not been journalling much. Hopefully I will make more time for that in February now that my mocks are over. I have been reading a lot. I finished "The Bell Jar" and Rimbaud's "Illuminations" this months and I'm hoping to finish "Mrs Dalloway" tonight. I've been reading mostly at the weekends uninterrupted for long stretches of time. It must be the time of year, but all I feel like doing at the moment is reading. I hope this means I will be able to get through my 2015 reading list.

One of the only journal collages in my new journal that I started at the end of 2014. The photos are from a day I spent in Hastings with Antonio and Jessie over the Christmas break which was lovely despite the fact that I dragged them all over searching for a record store that we never found. We went to the Jack and Dinos Chapman exhibition at the Jerwood Gallery earlier in the day, which was fantastic. I'd even go as far as saying that it was the best non-fashion related art exhibition I have ever been to. The pieces were really moving and all genuinely interesting to look at.


I am obsessed with clothes at the moment (as in literal clothes, not just salivating over couture on and I have a mental list of items that I would love to own. I finally made a note of these in this Polyvore collage. Some of the pieces are not exact as I have yet to find a brocade pinafore, for example. I'm trying not to spend any money until summer but I might treat myself if I'm pleased with my mock results.

So, the Paris couture shows have ended and some of my favourites are Atelier Versace, Valentino and Elie Saab. It was Viktor & Rolf, however, that was my absolute number one favourite collection. Viktor & Rolf was definitely the most artistic. Each piece was like a sculpture that you would expect to find installed in an art gallery. Despite the humble, earthy vibes suggested by the straw headpieces, the dresses were evidently luxurious. I may write a full review at some point but I just LOVE it so much. Many other couture collections were cute and wearable (such as Elie Saab that I have reviewed below) but Viktor & Rolf was something really special.

Elie Saab Spring 2015 Couture

The show instantly brought to mind an extravagant evening garden party, as feminine models strutted quickly down the runway to the upbeat opening track, The Temples’ “Colours to Life”, that brought an element of modernity to the collection so dotingly conceptualised by Elie Saab for his Spring 2015 couture collection. The models stalked down the dully lit runway on its forest-like set in a sea of delicately sheer gowns and embellished mini dresses that sparkle like a lake under the moonlight. The soundtrack took the show through the ages; from The Temples to Mozart, reflecting the timeless beauty of the collection.

This world created by Saab was really brought to life in the show. One can fantasise about sashaying confidently through a paradise forest wearing haute couture. It was the set and soundtrack that helped to contextualise the clothes and created a lasting impression of this enchanting forest full of beautiful princesses wearing breathtaking iridescent dresses.

The speed and soundtrack initially brought a sense of modernity to the ancient art of couture, despite the classic floor-sweeping dresses, the collection and accompanying soundtrack evolved to span the ages. The fast and feminine models strutting down the catwalk demonstrated the element of power than can be embodied in couture. Even the charming and completely wearable mini dresses in the collection seemed to have the ability to make the wearer a somehow more supreme version of themselves. The collection risked becoming a Spring cliché with Saab’s persistent use of a pastel colour scheme. However, the ingenuity of the handful of pastel lime dresses straddled that obstacle. Pastels were given a classical overhaul in shimmering gowns and dainty ruffled mini dresses. Sophisticated black dresses balanced the collection’s sweetness with a more celestial suggestion.

Elie Saab’s Spring 2015 couture collection definitely does haute couture justice, as it is not an overstatement to suggest that each and every look could be described as art. It could be argued that there is nothing to distinguish this collection from others Saab has created in the past, but what he does he does so well so I’m not complaining.
